Why are there less working women in India?
A few days ago, I came across a YouTube channel which had most of its content related to Men's Rights Activism. I found most of the videos there to be really helpful. For example, there were videos explaining how some laws are gender-biased, how one should handle false allegations etc. All was going well, until I came across a video where they proclaimed that since women don't work or apparently, in their words, 'didn't have the biological urge to compete', it was wrong for women to complain about equal rights.
I'm going to be completely honest, it simply did not make any sense for me. ( Spoilers : It still doesn't )
Well, it also made me a bit angry. But since I'm not responsible for changing everyone's mindset, I just let it slide by. However, since I'm someone who can't stop overthinking, various questions crossed my mind. Why do I not see more working women? If we boast so much about the increase in girl child's education, then why are we still lacking in women's labour force?
Neither am I a social scientist, nor am I a pyschologist. So, I won't be able to answer the question [ Sorry for the clickbait ;) ] For what I know, are an incredible amount of stories. I know some of them due to my mother's beautiful storytelling, and some due to books written by many strong women.
So today, I'll tell you some stories.
Once, there was a young lady. Her job as a computer scientist was something shSire had always aspired for. However, she never thought she had to question her priorities. She often was asked; what was more important? Her family or her job? She always did manage them both pretty well, but this question still arose from her mother-in-law. Once she stated her family as being the most important, she was told to leave the job, and focus on her family. She did what was told.
A little away from where the previous story happened, a family was happy upon fixing their daughter's marriage. After all, the groom was an educated man, and it would be ironical for him to be a doctor and refuse his wife to still continue her job. Maybe the family got a bit too carried away with happiness to question this to the groom, because they probably never thought that educated people would also think that a wife belongs at home.
Dreams need inspiration to be fulfilled. When every woman around the little girl didn't raise their voice around men, did not dare to dream, and could not think of their future as a way to explore their talents, she took her inspiration from her mother. Her mother, despite unfair criticism, always found a way to be a small yet significant contributor to the house income. The mother raised a fighter that day.
At another town with a forgettable name, another such woman was fulfilling her dream of earning her own money. Her family, despite being supportive, couldn't help but make their daughter stay at home when she had to experience something unspeakable.
Seems like a Star Plus Serial, doesn't it?
Maybe all of these women could have been the part of the work force if the social conditions of our country allowed them to do so. Many women leave their jobs due to influence of family, friends, religion and social status. Instead of passing on insignificant and obviously biased comments about a particular sect of society, we can always try to step in a person's shoes, and understand their situation.
If you enjoy reading such stories from me, please consider supporting me and criticising me as well so that I can keep improving!
Thank you!
Incredibly mind-blowing///
ReplyDeleteWould be lying if I said I wasn't angry with what just came across me, all the stories... But in the end, I just felt disappointment taking over me.
ReplyDeleteI really really hope that things change but I know it will take time. Thank you for this amazing post!!
Why WOMEN is equivalent to VENERABLE?? Why she always have to fight for right when they are not supposed to be faught for....
ReplyDeleteVery well composed and presented beautifully... Would like more such to ponder upon🙌🏻🙌🏻
The point that just hit me was why does women have to answer to what is more important to her...she clearly knows how to manage both her professional and personal life...
ReplyDeleteBeautifully presented and loved reading every bit of it!!!
Every men and women has their share of struggle. Its better to fight every moment than to play the victim card, because that will not give any satisfaction. Nicely depicted.
